More on my hut designs

My huts are almost completely hand made in the workshop. The window frames are made from a good quality hardwood and I also make the stable door too, often from reclaimed pine and cedar panelling.  The pine has a lovely rich depth of colour and is over 150 years old.  Built-in bunkbeds with handmade steps to reach the top bunk and other bespoke furniture can also feature in my huts.

  • There are hints of design elements that I have picked up from working alongside talented craftsmen and from places I have worked. An example of this is my portico design, inspired from a huge barn in Austria and is now a recognisable feature of my huts. It also gives extra strength to the roof above the door, not to mention some protection from the rain.

  • There are some sections that I don’t make myself, such as the steel chassis. In this case I work closely with my local welder to produce a frame that’s strong and versatile.

The stained-glass windows are also made in collaboration with a talented stained-glass artist. Regular conversations and drawings are exchanged between us before the design is finalised and he works his magic. I then take great pleasure in hand making the frames, for which the hardwood sapele is used

Popular uses for shepherd’s huts

  • Office/Studio - Birch Leaf Design Shepherd's Huts

    Office/Studio

Perhaps you would like a little extra space to work in, or have a hobby to nurture? This desk is an example of a purpose built piece of furniture I designed and made for an Office/Studio. Something similar could be made for you.

  • Spare bedroom - Birch Leaf Design Shepherd's Huts

    Spare Bedroom

If you need a little extra space, a shepherd’s hut in the garden can be a great alternative to an extension. It’s fun, great to look at and likely to be much cheaper than alternatives.

  • Holiday Rental -Steph's Cabins

    Holiday Rental / Diversify

Share your hut with others, and get paid for it.

If you’re considering a glamping business, one of my huts would be a lovely choice. You could include a wood burning stove or electric heater, built in sleeping quarters, kitchenette, or anything else suitable for your project.

  • Tiny house - Birch Leaf Design Shepherd's Huts

    Tiny House

A shepherd’s hut could serve as a tiny home for anyone wanting a simpler life, or if you’re put off by the price of bricks and mortar. Tiny homes are more energy efficient, easier to maintain and could save you a lot of money in the long run.

  • Hosting space - Birch Leaf Design Shepherd's Huts

    Hostess with the Mostess

A shepherd’s hut is a fantastic place to invite guests to for celebrations, parties or evening drinks. It could also double up as a cinema room, gym or music studio for those relaxing evenings.

  • Cosy Retreat - Birch Leaf Design Shepherd's Huts

    Cosy Retreat

Sit back, put the fire on and enjoy life’s simple pleasures.

Inspired by the age-old shepherd's hut dating back hundreds of years, my huts combine traditional elements, such as a stable door and curved tin roof, with today's modern comforts, enabling a very cosy and enjoyable experience for all.
