  • Answer: Decades if looked after well.

    More details: Shepherd’s huts are usually made from a combination of materials such wood and tin, which can and will decay if left to the elements without treatment.  Appropriate action such as coating exposed wood with a suitable wood preserver can increase it’s lifespan by many years. 

  • Answer: Yes, if you have opted for power to be installed.

    More details: An on or off-grid setup is available for your hut. 240v electrics are installed by a certified electrician.

  • Answer: not really.  

    More details: Although you would be able to hear rain in heavy downpours, I insulate all of my huts with 3” high performing noise reducing rockwool, offering very good noise reduction.

  • Answer: Yes, if you want it to be.

    More details: I offer an electric heater or woodburner for warmth, both with the capability of making it warm and toasty for you.

  • Answer: Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

  • Answer: Ensure that there is suitable access and that your hut can be transported and positioned on a hard surface.

  • Answer: Shaped wooden planks often used on the outside of shepherd’s huts or garden rooms.

    More details: This is what I use on the outside of my huts - Gallery for examples. TnG boards slot together with the tongue (the thin side of a plank) slotting into the gap of another plank, known as the groove.  This allows the wood to expand and contract in changing weather conditions with a reduced risk of splitting.

  • Answer: How long is a medium size piece of string?

    More details:  Shepherd’s huts vary in size range from small (6’ by 12’) to fairly large (8’ by 18’) depending on your desires. Please see my Shepherd’s Huts page for more details.

  • Answer:  I prefer the look of wood! But tin is available too.

    More details:  Traditional huts were often clad with tin as this was a more readily available and cheaper option to wood. Nowadays both are commonly used so the choice is yours. Wood is also more sustainable.
